Natural Park of Serra d' Aire and Candeeiros (PNSAC)
Only a small area of the municipal territory is included in this natural park . Of peculiar characteristics, PNSAC stands out by the richness, variety and abundance of karst structures, including caves, potholes , sinkholes and lapiás fields. The human landscape, in turn, also has unique features, particularly those resulting from the use of stone in small constructions ( dwelling houses , mills, walls ).
Caves of Almonda
The Almonda Cave, extends for more than 10 km and is a national speleological sanctuary. Is the largest karst network currently known in Portugal. Consists of several underground streams behind the source of the river Almonda. Regarding the cultural heritage, there's several archaeological sites, ranging from the Lower Paleolithic to Roman times. The cave was classified as a cultural heritage building on November 30, 1993.
Caves of Lapas
A 2 km from the city , under the typical houses and streets of the village of Lapas , focuses a maze of galleries carved into the rock . The caves , which they named the village , are a set of underground tunnels , classified as a Public Interest since 1943. The accessible route is only part of a larger network that ran almost the entire hill where lies the village .
Rio Almonda - Ribeira
Born in the village of the same name . In its route of 30 km through the municipalities of Torres Novas and Golegã and flows on the right bank of the Tagus. Flanked of wetlands since virtually its source to its mouth , where those already assume the feature of small marshlands , the Almonda river gives the landscape of the county and was a unique feature in the past, determining element of the local economy .
Natural the Dinosaurs Tracks monument
A 16 km from the city, in the Serra de Aire, is the largest expanse of dinosaur footprints rails. The succession of rock strata dating back to a past of some 170 million years. In this field, are some of the best examples of sauropod tracks known worldwide. This paleontological deposit, discovered on July 4, 1994 on the site of a former quarry, contains one of the oldest world records of sauropod footprints, whose brands and impressions left in the Middle Jurassic limestone slab are older than 175 million years . In "Jurassic Park", with an area of 60 000 m2, can be observed several hundred footprints organized into about two dozen tracks. Among them, for its long stretch, excellent condition and spectacle, one stands out with 147 meters long. The rails are made up of impressions of the ends of the fore and hind limbs, clearly reflecting the passage of large quadrupeds. The deposit is classified as a Natural Monument.
Torres Novas Castle
Arab twelfth-century fortress, the Castle Torres Novas, definitely conquered in 1190 by King Sancho I, as a symbol of the political importance of Torres Novas in medieval times . Surrounded by a wall of eleven towers and the house of the mayor ( century . XIV) , the castle has , within the walled enclosure, a pleasant and well-kept garden . Has undergone several reconstructions , including the stand of Sancho I, of Ferdinand and that was made on the occasion of the celebrations of the centenary of Independence and Restoration ( 1940) . The ex-libris of the city was listed as a National Monument on June 16 , 1910. A project of physical and landscape restoration , with the construction of pedestrian circuits and a leisure area has the monument and the area surrounding places even more pleasant . The towers that surround you can enjoy great views over the city.
Cardílio Village
There are many vestiges of the Roman presence in the current territory of Torres Novas county. From a pool of about 28 sites where artifacts and trademarks of Roman occupation have been found in this region, highlight mainly the Roman ruins of Vila Cardílio, located about two miles of Torres Novas and laid bare by the charge of the excavations Colonel Afonso Hall, from 1962. These excavations have revealed a number of foundations, column bases and ornate floors with different patterns of "tesserae" belonging to an old farmhouse Roman consists of three main elements: input, peristyle and exedra. Collected the vast estate, the Municipal Museum Carlos Reis, presents the permanent core of archeology in particular in the exhibition "The Song of Avita 'currencies of century. II, III and IV d.c. ceramics, bronzes, glass, amphorae, rings and even a statue of Eros. Villa Cardílio was classified as a National Monument on January 24, 1967.
Marsh Nature Reserve Boquilobo
Located about 7 km from the city , near the confluence of Almonda and Tagus rivers , Paul is a wetland , rich in birds , particularly waterfowl and colonies of herons , and flora, highlighting the groves of willow , plants water and reeds . This "sanctuary" natural , classified as a Nature Reserve since 1980 , also incorporates the Biosphere Reserve Network ( UNESCO) and the Wetlands List of International Importance ( Ramsar Convention) since 1981 and 1996 , respectively.
